Cosmetology Program Design

Program Philosophy

We believe that in today’s society, a student needs any additional training he/she can get in order to prepare for a job.  Through Career & Technical education, a student receives this training in a special trade area.  In order to keep up with the demand of ever changing work environments students will receive the skills they need to advance in the work field. 

We believe that in Cosmetology, the student will receive 15 months of valuable theory and hands-on experience.  After successful completion of this program, the student will be qualified for an entry-level position in the Cosmetology field.

We believe the Adult Education Cosmetology Program is designed to teach the student basic skills, the importance of good attendance, professional appearance, proper work habits, team work, communication skills and social development. 

Program Goals

The Cosmetology program’s goals are to develop:

  • basic computer and business skills

  • a positive attitude toward working through teamwork and professionalism

  • the math and science skills necessary to perform well in the business world

  • the ability to solve problems

  • leadership skills through team exercises

  • responsibility and dependability in students

  • entry level job skills and/or further education

  • pride in work

  • professional ethics

Population to be Served

The Cosmetology program is open to the community.  Registration and tuition paid and/or arranged will be required in order to start the program. 

Students who are educationally, economically, and/or physically disadvantaged are given an opportunity to participate in the program unless the disability prevents the student from benefiting from the program.  Pre-requisites for the program include high school diploma and/or GED completion. 

Housing of the Program

The program is taught in the Cosmetology lab.  During the second half of the program, it may also include supervised work experiences in the form of apprenticeship or early placement in area businesses. 

Supervisor of the Program

The supervisor of the Cosmetology program is the Director and the Instructional Supervisor.

Basic Program Operation

Program activities include related theory and hands-on laboratory experiences primarily conducted in school during a 5-hour lab period.  Off premises activates such as field trips and apprenticeship/early placement enhance the learning experience.

Internship Program

Internship experience provides students with a real-world work experience.  Students must meet state and school requirements listed below to be eligible. 

  • Students shall have completed at least fifty per cent of their base license course outlines before       they shall participate as an intern.

  • Interns with less than seventy per cent of their program complete shall not provide chemical services.   

  • Students shall be in good standing at the school.        

  • Students shall have met the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology eligibility requirements.

  • Participating salons shall have met the guidelines set by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. 

Critical Thinking and Decision Making

Students have the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills and decision-making skills as an integral part of the classroom instruction and lab activities.

Students learn these skills through the problem-solving approach and complete projects which include the identification of options, the selection, testing, and evaluation of an option, and acceptable solutions based on the conclusions.

Statement of Modification

The Cosmetology curriculum may be adjusted to better meet the needs of students with Individualized Educational Plans.

Cancellation of Classes

The Adult Workforce Development of MCC reserves the right to cancel, postpone, discontinue, or combine classes before or during the classes. We must cancel classes that do not meet a required minimum enrollment. A minimum enrollment is based different for each course. If a class is cancelled for any of the above reasons, the student will receive a full refund. Attempts are made to contact students who class has been cancelled. To avoid class cancelations please register at least 10 days before the start date of the course.

Cancellation of Classes
You may assume that your class will be held unless you are notified that it has been cancelled.

School Closing
Day school closing does not necessarily mean that evening adult classes are canceld. If we cancel, your teacher will be responsible for letting you know.

Refund Policy
Cancellation of the course- Maplewood Career Center Adult Education reserves the right to cancel or delay the opening of any course. Reasons for cancellation or delay might include, but are not limited to, insufficient enrollment, and/or concerns regarding illness, safety, equipment, or construction, among other extenuating circumstances. 
When the Director of Adult Education decides that a class will be cancelled or postponed, the school will make every effort to notify registered students immediately by the fastest means available, including phone and email. Please make sure to notify the Adult Education Office if any contact information has changed.   Refunds for Cancelled Classes If Maplewood Career Center Adult Education cancels a class, the school will refund the tuition in full to the person who paid for the class. 

Withdrawal Policy
When students withdraw from class, a $25.00 withdrawal fee is charged for course withdrawal. Full Tuition minus the $25.00 withdrawal fee will be refunded only if written notice is received within 3 business days of the course beginning.
Official withdrawals, the postmark on written notification will determine the cancellation date, or the date said information is delivered to the school administrator/owner in person.  Any monies due a student who unofficially withdraws from the school shall be refunded within 45 days of a determination by the school that the student has withdrawn without notifying the institution.  If a student has not been present in school for thirty days, they will be officially withdrawn from the course. 
For students who enroll in and begin classes, the following schedule of tuition adjustments is authorized:

            The registration fee and the cost of the kit is part of the total price set out and is not refundable.

Returned Checks
6151 - BAD CHECKS Adopted 5/19/94 When the District receives a check from a student or parent that, when deposited, is returned marked "insufficient funds", the Treasurer shall provide an opportunity for the payer to make proper payment or to arrange for a satisfactory payment schedule. If payment is not received within thirty (30) days, the payment schedule is not adhered to, or the monies do not appear to be collectable, the Board of Education authorizes the Treasurer to remove the fee or charge from the District's Accounts Receivable to take appropriate action against the student and/or the parents.
